Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative, goal-oriented approach to counseling that helps individuals explore and resolve ambivalence about change. Developed by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, MI is grounded in the principles of empathy, acceptance, and support, aiming to empower clients to find intrinsic motivation for positive behavioral change.
How it Works
In Motivational Interviewing, the therapist adopts a non-confrontational and empathetic stance, seeking to understand the client's perspective without judgment. Through reflective listening and open-ended questioning, the therapist helps clients explore their values, goals, and aspirations, as well as the barriers that may be hindering progress.

Benefits of Motivational Interviewing
-
Explore Ambivalence
Central to MI is the exploration of ambivalence, the simultaneous presence of conflicting feelings or thoughts about change. Instead of imposing change directives, the therapist acknowledges and respects the client's autonomy, fostering an environment where individuals feel empowered to explore their own reasons for change.
-
Create Change
MI utilizes various techniques to evoke and strengthen motivation for change, including affirmations, reflective listening, and eliciting change talk. Affirmations highlight the client's strengths and successes, reinforcing their self-efficacy and confidence in their ability to change. Reflective listening involves paraphrasing and summarizing the client's statements, demonstrating empathy and understanding while encouraging further exploration.
-
Sustainable
Motivational Interviewing recognizes that change is a process that unfolds over time and emphasizes the importance of collaboration and self-discovery in the change process. By supporting individuals in clarifying their goals, exploring their values, and resolving ambivalence, MI empowers clients to make meaningful and sustainable changes in their lives.
